Parliament Speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed has voiced concern over the use of multiple plastic bags for waste disposal.

Nasheed took to Twitter on Thursday, stating that he has not seen plastic and paper waste segregated in plastic bags, adding that most countries only use plastic bags to dispose perishable waste.

As per Waste Management Company (WAMCO)'s announcement last month, households are to segregate waste starting 1 June.

WAMCO reserves the right to not collect waste from households unless the disposal meets the waste management requirements.

The waste management act was revised by Environment Ministry in August 2021 to add the requirement for segregated waste from households. As such, households must segregate waste according to plastics, perishable waste, and others that include clothes, metal, paper and such.

WAMCO has also introduced a Call and Pick Up Service (CAPS) for bulky waste that is not categorised under daily general waste.
