Environment Minister Aminath Shauna has stated that no additional fees will be charged by WAMCO for segregated individual household waste.

Minister Shauna made the remarks while speaking to press following an announcement by WAMCO that households must segregate waste starting 1 June.

WAMCO announcement highlighted that one of the major environmental issues faced by Maldives is the challenge in sustainable waste management. As such, during the joint press conference by Environment Ministry and WAMCO, Environment Minister noted that segregating household waste according to general waste, plastics, and others such as construction waste is vital to effectively managing waste.

Minister Shauna noted that waste disposal from islands follow waste segregation which needs to be implemented in Greater Male' region as well.

Speaking to the press, Deputy Managing Director of WAMCO, Ali Siraj stated that WAMCO will not charge any additional fees to the households for collecting segregated waste.

Starting 1 June, households are required to segregate waste according to general perishable waste, plastic waste, and other waste such as construction and toxic waste.
