Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the country's finance minister on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka's President's Office announced that following his oath of office, Ranil is set to lead the talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) for loan programmes to secure funds to assist in the country's economic crisis.

"Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as finance, economic stabilisation and national policies minister before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa this morning," the statement said.

Ranil has previously announced that he will present the country's interim budget within six weeks to re-route funds to a two-year relief plan.

The World Bank has stated that it will not provide any new financial aid to Sri Lanka until the country comes up with an adequate economic policy framework.

Sri Lanka continues to witness public unrest as the country continues to face fuel, food, and medicine shortages.
