Maldives National University (MNU)'s admin staff have on Sunday protested for salary revisions following President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's decision to raise teacher's salaries.
The salary increment for teachers and principals were met with criticism by lecturers who also demanded salary increments following the presidential address on 1st May. The Finance Ministry has since announced that lecturer's salaries will be revised under the national pay framework.
However, the government has not yet announced any salary increments for admin staff in the universities, leading to concerns from admin staff in MNU and IUM.
Speaking to 'One' on the condition of anonymity, one of the people leading the protest at MNU said that admin staff receive a comparably low income in regards to their workload. Admin staff do equal, if not more work compared to lecturers, protest leader said, adding that despite this, the government has made no plan to increase their salaries.
"We were hopeful when the President spoke about the salary structure revision. But we were disappointed and left out". The protest leader added that MNU has between 2000-3000 graduates a year, and their admin workload, including research is not a minimal job.
Admin staff salaries have not seen an increase in 10 years according to the protesters. As such, admin staff in MNU carried banners and placards in the university grounds today, dressed in black to express their discontent at the salary structures.
Deans of different faculties as well as other managerial staff at MNU joined the protest in solidarity with the admin staff.
