Maldives has confirmed support for Jamaica's candidate for Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, H.E Kamina Johnson-Smith in the elections to be held in June this year during Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih expressed Maldives' support for her candidacy on Wednesday on a call with Jamaican Prime Minister H.E Andrew Michael Holness.
Speaking during the call, President Solih stated that H.E Kamina Johnson-Smith was the most qualified candidate, noting her extensive experience and background. The president also expressed his confidence that under her tenure Maldives and other SIDS will be well represented.
The leaders also discussed the close bilateral relations between the countries. President Solih also extended an open invitation to the Jamaican Prime Minister to undertake a visit to Maldives.
H.E Kamina Johnson-Smith is the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in Jamaica. She currently serves as the Coordinator of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) Group and the World Trade Organisation in Geneva. Prior to this, she has served as the Chair of Caribbean Forum, President of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS), and the CARICOM Council on Trade and Development.
