A major protest is currently in the works, calling for the reveal of all the accounts and names of beneficiaries from corruption at MMPRC. The protest is set to take place before the Parliamentary elections 2019.
Former State Council of the Attorney General’s Office and popular attorney, Mariyam Shunana has made the announcement for the protest.
Shunana took to her twitter to declare the protest with the above photo and declared that the protest will be titled “Haamakurey” - set to take place on 15 February 2019.
The attorney stated the purpose of the protest and called on the citizens to do their duty in standing up in the face of corruption.
While this major protest is in the works to call for the release of information before the Parliamentary election, there are allegations that current MPs are beneficiaries of the MMPRC finances acquired through corruption. Many of these current MP’s are also looking to take part in the upcoming Parliamentary elections as well.
In an interview given to One Online today, Shunana said that the reason to not reveal beneficiaries of the corruption even if the are current MP’s, is incomprehensible to her. She reiterated that the finances belong to the people and that this is the most vital time to reveal the information of who benefitted from this corruption.
The attorney pointed out that while campaigns are ongoing, voters have a right to know this information regarding their elected MP’s, prior to the Parliamentary elections. She stressed that it is the right of every single citizen to be informed of whether they are casting their vote for a member that had delved into finances acquired through corruption.
Shunana said that conducting investigations and raising charges against MP’s once elected will be made more difficult. As such, she said that the issue will be closer to not being resolved, than it will be to reaching a solution. Shunana reiterated that elected MP’s will be in power after the Parliamentary election and that right now is the time to reveal their names.
The attorney further said that while every person speaks of the significance of reforming the Parliament, steps towards action should be taken with full transparency on both sides.
