Gaafu Alifu Atoll Gemanafushi has been placed under monitoring after five people had tested positive for COVID-19.

Manager of the Gemanafushi Health Center, Ahmed Muaz, told ONE Online that the five people that tested positive include for people from a fishing boat.

Muaz says that random sample were tested in the island with since a flu is present and a woman who went to Male' City from the island tested positive. And five of those samples tested positive for COVID.

He said that the random samples did focus on those with flu and contacts of the woman who tested positive on Male'.

Gemanafushi is a fishing island with a population of about 2,000 people and 90 percent of the population has completed the COVID-19 vaccination.

Currently, there are 20 islands under monitoring while a total of 227 people have passed away in the country due to complications with COVID-19.
