Adhuham Mohamed has plead guilty to the charges levied on him for the explosion of an IED targeted at Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed last May.
State had pressed four different charges on Adhuham regarding the attempted assassinations. The charges are; one count of carrying out an act of terrorism, one count of conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism act, one count of attempted murder using a sharp-edged instrument or dangerous weapon, and one count of supporting a terrorist organization.
During the trial hearing held Tuesday, Adhuham had plead guilty to all four charges under a plea deal with the state. Under the deal, a potentially 37 year jail term has been lowered to 23 years, if the court finds him guilty of all four charges.
Following this, the remainder of the court proceedings were held behind closed doors as per the request of the defendant and the prosecution.
Six other people have also been charged in the case, in addition to Adhuham.
Speaker Nasheed was left with several serious injuries following the attack. He left to seek further treatment in Germany and is currently in the United Kingdom.
