The inquiry report on the 6 May bombing to assassinate the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed, has said that it cannot be accepted that there were no indication of a possible attack on the Speaker of the Parliament before the bombing.

The 241 Committee of the Parliament, which carried out the investigation has released the report ok their findings.

According to the report, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) did not receive any prior indication or intelligence reports of a coming attack. And while nthe MNDF has previously made the statement saying there was no intelligence reports, the report said that the inquiry committee does not accept that.

The report said that there were indicator of an attack on the former President and there were numerous intelligence reports not a potential attack as well.

On 3 May 2021, the MP for Hulhudhoo constituency, Ilyas Labeeb learned from a member of public that Speaker of the Parliament was going to be attacked, according to the report, and that information was shared with the Defence Minister, Mariya Ahmed Didi and the former President Nasheed.

Minister Mariya told the inquiry that she did receive the information and since it is a criminal offence to accept money for an assassination, she asked the MP to share the information with the Maldives Police Service.

The Defence Minister told the inquiry committee that she did not share the information from MP Labeeb with anyone in the MNDF. Chief of Defence Force, Vice Chief of Defence Force, SPG and the Commander of the Defence Intelligence have all confirmed to the inquiry that they did not receive any information from the Defence Minister.

The report also has an anonymous account from a high ranking officer of the Police stating that this was not an attack that can be carried out without a prior indication and believes the information regarding such an attack would reach the authorities.

Vice Chief of Defence Force, Abdulraheem Abdullatheef told the inquiry that MNDF had received sufficient indicators to flag the threat including reports that the Speaker of the Parliament was being followed and his movements were being observed.

The inquiry report said that there were repeated reports of threats made against the former President and the MNDF received a report of an extremist group surveillance President Nasheed and planning an attack.

And President Nasheed's Close Protection Team had highlighted that suspected extremists were following the former President on 2 March 2021, during the opening ceremony of the campaign office of the MDP candidate for Hulhumale' in the Local Council Election, Rizna Career.

Threat Level Assessment report from the MNDF also noted that President Nasheed was being followed and his security was being assessed by an extremist group.

The inquiry report said that MNDF had received reports that the name of the Speaker of the Parliament was on the top of the list of MPs that received death threats following the appointment of a female judge to the Supereme Court. And on a separate occasion, Nasheed's security noticed people surveiling near Yaagoothuge and informed the Police and officers were sent to remove them from the area.

MNDF also received a tweet in 2019 from an independent member of the public who said they had learned from an extremist that an plan is in motion to assassinate President Nasheed, according to the report.
