Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that Maldives and India are partners in ensuring progress and development as well as establishing peace.

The former President said this in a tweet posted last night.

President Maumoon stated that he was honored to have been invited to attend the function celebrating the 70th Republic Day of India. The function was held last night and organized by the Ambassador of India to Maldives Mr. Akhilesh Mishra.

The former ties between Maldives and India had suffered greatly during the previous administration of President Yameen Abdul Gayoom. Talks had however ensued during the current administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and ties are being strengthened between the two countries. President Solih had said that the foreign policy in Maldives would be to ensure that relations do not sour with any nation. He had said that it is important to strengthen ties with all nations.
