While a total of 4000 membership forms have been submitted to the Elections Commission in an effort to form political party PNC, 3000 of the forms have been declared invalid by the Commission. The party then submitted an additional 1100 membership forms. The political party People's National Congress party (PNC) is being formed under the leadership of former President Abdulla Yameen.
One Online has been informed that the most recent membership forms were submitted to the Elections Commission the past Sunday.
Spokesperson of the Elections Commission Ahmed Akram responded to questions regarding the submission. He said that the Commission is in the process of checking the forms submitted by PNC. Akram also said that the Commission will give permission to move on to the next step of the procedure as soon as the checking is complete. Akram also elected not to comment on any queries regarding valid or invalid membership forms.
A member of PNC informed One Online that the party has taken back over a 1000 membership forms that had been declared invalid by the Elections Commission. When inquired if the exact same forms were submitted after corrections or revisions, the PNC member elected to not give further comments on the matter.
The request for permission to form PNC was submitted to the Elections Commission by the MP of Fonadhoo constituency Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
A recent member of PNC and former Secretary General of Progressive Party of maldives (PPM) Mohamed Hussain Shareef spoke to One Online regarding the matter. He had said that the Elections Commission is purposefully imposing restrictions on the process of forming of PNC.
