Fuad Thaufeeq has been elected as the President of the Elections Commission of the Maldives.

The Elections Commission said on Wednesday that Fuad was elected president with the unanimous votes of all the members.

Ahmed Shareef, the previous president of the commission had resigned last June, leaving the position vacant.

Fuad had previously expressed his interest for the position, but had said that he will only compete for it after discussing with the commission members, and with their support.

He has also served as a member of the commission from 2008 to 2009, and was the President of the commission until March 2014.

Following Shareef's resignation, Mohamed Asif had also competed for the vacant position. In addition to Asif, current members include; Fuad Thaufeeq, Dr. Mohamed Zahir, Vice President of the Commission Ismail Habeeb and Ali Nashath.
