Public Health Specialist, Dr. Sheena Moosa has said that Maldives is now counted as a high-risk covid country.
Speaking during a press conference by the HEOC, Dr. Sheena said that the current COVID numbers are concerning and that the Maldives is no longer considered a COVID 'safe' country.
Since the second wave of COVID in the Maldives, many countries had declared the Maldives as a safe country to travel to. Following this, the number of tourist arrivals had also seen a drastic spike.
While the number of new cases has been increasing since December, Dr. Sheena said that this increase was fueled by a new COVID variant in the Maldives paired with the careless following of health guidelines.
HEOC also announced a new curfew for Male' City from 11:00pm till 4:30am amid the growing number of COVID cases.
