A flight of Indian Airlines have arrived in the Maldives with 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.
India is currently using both Covishield, developed by Oxford and Astrazeneca, and the Indian comapny Bharat Biotech's COVAXIN.
And so, the doses delivered to the Maldives today were that of the Covishield vaccine under free-aid from the Indian government.
One Online has confirmed that the first shipment of vaccines provided by India would be used for the frontline medical staff, elderly and the high-risk people with chronic diseases.
Talking to PSM, the Spokesperson of the Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC), Dr. Nazla Rafeeq said that everyone has to receive wo doses of the vaccine, the shipment delivered today can vaccinate 50,000 people.
Aside from the free-aid vaccine from India, the Maldivian government has also signed the agreement to purchase the Oxford-Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccine that guarantees 700,000 doses.
The Maldives is also part of the WHO-led COVAX facility that provides vaccines to 20 percent of the population.
