President of the Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Shareef, has said that there are no legal issues with the EC currently having a vacancy for the position of Vice President.

Talking to One Online today, Shareef said that the law does not state a specific way to appoint a Vice President for the Elections Commission and there are no legal issues for not having a Vice President at this time.

He said that a Vice President will be appointed to the Commission when all five seats of the Commission have been filled. And while the chance to apply for the EC membership have been closed, the names of the applicant who applied have been sent to the President’s Office.

A name will be sent to the Parliament for review when the parliament sittings resume on 4 February 2021.
