To address the issue of waste bags on the streets during the day, Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has decided to collect waste after midnight.
Currently, during the COVID-19 situation, WAMCO has advised the households to bring out waste between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. However, many has raised concern with the delay in collection which results in waste bags being on the streets for long hours.
Male’ City Mayor, Shifa Mohamed took to Twitter to announce that the City Council and the WAMCO are preparing to start collecting waste after midnight.
Talking to One Online, Mayor Shifa said that the City Council meeting this week discussed changing the waste collecting time, made the decision and has now informed WAMCO to bring the change. The Mayor did not say the time frame where the collection would be taking place.
Managing Director of WAMCO, Adam Mohamed told One Online that it has been some time that they have been discussing the collection of waste late at night. He said that WAMCO is currently collecting at a time where a lot of people are on the streets thus making it not completely safe.
He said that they want to set the time to bring out the waste between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. and start the collection at 12 a.m. but the time may change before a final decision.
The WAMCO Managing Director said that the new collection times would be announced very soon.
