Transparency Maldives said that submitting financial statements alone is not enough and that the statements need to be validated.

The Advocacy and Communications Manager, Aiman Rasheed, commended the move to disclose financial statements.

Aiman said that the statements should be disclosed in a way that is transparent from all sides. He further reiterated that the statements should be publicly disclosed after being audited and validated by government tax authorities.

Aiman added that an effective anti-corruption measure would encompass a great area. He noted that all other members of government bodies such as Parliament, Judiciary and various departments should disclose their financial statements.

He further said that in most countries, disclosing financial statements involve analyzing the assets and income of family and relations as well. Aiman also said that it is imperative to ensure that no financial benefits have been earned by close relations of those in power.

President Ibrahim M. Solih, Vice President Faisal Naseem and the entire cabinet of the current administration are now required to publicly disclose financial statements and update them annually. The move was taken under a campaign pledge of President Solih.
