MP for Galolhu-East constituency Eva Abdulla has raised the question as to what had been accomplished through TM’s “Magey MP”  initiative. Transparency Maldives (TM) had previously launched a website to hold members of Parliament accountable under the slogan “Magey MP” or “My member of Parliament”.

MP Eva said this in response to a tweet posted by MP for Addu-Meedhoo constituency Rozaina Adam regarding the TM website launched last February. MP Eva had said that she welcomes holding the members of Parliament accountable. She noted that while the TM website had accumulated information on MP’s, it had however not revealed information regarding the current situations at Parliament.

She said that the website does not clarify several vital information regarding whether the MP is in prison or wheather members had been notified of a vote taking place at that day’s Parliamentary sitting. She further said that other details such as whether MP’s had chosen to boycott a sitting and the reason for this action or whether attendance had been taken at the Parliamentary sitting is also not specified  on the website. She raised the question as to what was the purpose of a website that delves into a shallow pool of information concerning Parliament.

MP Eva had noted that while she has one of the highest attendance numbers at Parliamentary sittings, the TM website does not provide that information. She further said that while the previous Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed had attended Parliamentary sessions, there had been debates conducted at Parliament regarding acts of injustice conducted by the previous Speaker. MP Eva raised the question as to how the situations of holding members of Parliament accountable are conducted by TM.

MP Eva had shared photographs of various actions taken on the Parliament floor against the injustices implemented by the previous Speaker of Parliament Maseeh.

While the TM website has shared various information on the 135 members at Parliament as well as 209 Bills, the website has also included the votes of MPs at Parliament. The website also lists members of Parliament that do not attend Parliamentary sessions and includes a profile for every MP, including their social media profiles on twitter, Facebook as well as phone numbers.

Several members of Parliament have however directed criticisms toward the website regarding lack of information on vital areas. This included  information on why certain MP’s did not vote on Bills or why MP’s were not in attendance.
