Speaker of the Parliament, former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has asked the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee to investigate Health Ministry’s negligence in the purchase of ventilators after the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) decided that the report from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) cannot prove an illicit profit.

After starting the parliament sitting today, Speaker Nasheed said that a No Confidence motion have been submitted with 24 signatures against the Health Minister, Abdulla Ameen. And the 14-day notice to the Minister before the debate was issued last night.

However, early this morning, Health Minister Ameen had resigned and the No Confidence motion would be coming to a halt.

The Speaker of the Parliament said that there is a difference of opinion among the Maldives Police, ACC and the Prosecutor General’s Office in the joint investigation into the case and the PG is convinced that there is no evidence to pursue charges.

“And so, in this situation, (I) ask the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee to look into the case.” Nasheed said.

The ACC sent cases against 11 people including the Health Minsiter to the PG Office before the Prosecutor General decided, yesterday, not to pursue charges stating that the report does not prove an illicit profit was made.
