Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that no Minister of the government should have their actions impede on the jurisdiction of the Local Government Act.

The Speaker of the Parliament made the statement following a response from the Minister of Transportation and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula to a question by the MP for Hoarafushi constituency, Ahmed Saleem.

MP Saleem asked the Transport Minister about the jetty being developed alongside the Hoarafushi Airport and in a follow-up, asked if the Ministry has the authorization of the Hoarafushi Island Council to run development projects in their jurisdiction as per the Local Council Act.

The Hoarafushi MP said that although the airport development is outside the Council jurisdiction, the jetty and channel do fall in their jurisdiction.

Minister Nahula said that she does believe that is how the law is set however, when a Presidential policy is set and assigned, it needs to be carried out as a person sworn in to carry out Presidential orders within the constitution.

MP Saleem then said that Minister did not answer his question and he does require an answer.

The Speaker of the Parliament then said that the response from the Transport Minister is really clear and has stated that the work is going forward as per the order of the President.

Speaker Nasheed said that it is not good for any government Minister or institute to work impede on the Local Government Act.
