Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has plead guilty to all seven charges being pressed against him by the state in the MMPRC Corruption Scandal.
After the Criminal Court initially dropped all seven charges against Adeeb, High Court ordered them to reopen the case during appeal proceedings that took place at the High Court.
State spent about three hours to press charges against Adeeb today. All charges were once again submitted under a plea deal reached with the defendant.
After the state read all charges, Judge Hassan Saeed inquired about the plea deal to which the state noted that the plea deal was reached under Criminal Procedure Code section 104.
Upon being offered a chance to present his defense to the charges, Adeeb had pleaded guilty to all seven charges and requested for the trial to move ahead quickly. Adeeb also highlighted that he was not under any duress to agree to the plea deal.
He noted that he had time to reflect about all of the charges during his time in prison, which has lead him to finally admit to his guilt in the crimes.
Adeeb further said that the previous government had decided to pin it all on him and to end the investigation after finding a few of the people guilty. He said that this was the main reason behind his refusal to cooperate back then.
The former Vice President also said that he believes the current government is capable of carrying out the trials fairly and noted how they have been doing a great job at holding several institutions accountable. He further added that he will be fully cooperative and that the embezzled funds belonged to the public and that they should be found.
He also noted that several politicians and political parties had benefitted from the money.
