Criminal Court has ordered the accused in the rape of a 14-year-old girl to be detained in custody un the end of the trial.

The accused in the case is 26-year-old Ahmed Nishan from Laamu Atoll Mundoo who was arrested on last Wednesday.

Maldives Police Service said that he was taken to the Criminal Court the next day and court ruled to keep him in custody until the end of the trial as the case in question is that of sexual assault and the accused could be a threat to society if released.

Police said that they working to complete the investigation and forward the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

This is the sixth person this month has been detained until the end of the trial in connection to rape and sexual assault charges.
