Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed, has said that government institutes must adhere to the decisions and rulings by the parliament.

The Speaker's statement came in response to Villingilli MP Mohamed Saud's debate on the emergency motion filed by Feydhoo MP Mohamed Nihad regarding steps to be taken to mitigate the losses of the public during the current severe weather conditions.

MP Saud noted that the issues faced by the public are often talked about in the 19th session of the Parliament and that decrees as well as recommendations have been submitted to the government to solve these issues. However, MP Saud stressed that government institutions have failed to take such measures seriously.

The lawmaker further added that if said institutions do not take such matter seriously, the Parliament needs to step up and make those institutions responsible.

Following MP Saud's statement, Speaker Nasheed said that all government institutes must adhere to the decisions and rulings by the parliament as stated by the constitution.

The Speaker also added that is is the prerogative of parliamentarians to hold a vote of confidence motions against those who refuse to follow such.
