Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that one of the most important policies of the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is to ensure the freedom of press.

He made the statement in his address on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day 2020 and said that freedom of press is the most important thing in sustaining an independent democracy.

Minister Imran said that while the press is a partner in democracy, the government aims to develop Maldivian journalism with every step that is in line with the thinking of the journalists.

The Home Minister said that a discussion conference has been held with editors to listen to the concerns of the journalists and a report on the conference have been published today.

Minister Imran noted that there are a number of goals to be achieved in terms of press freedom including developing various aspects of journalism.

He also expressed gratitude to Maldivian journalists for their work in bringing accurate news amid the COVID-19 global pandemic.
