Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that establishing "Open Prisons" is going to being a major positive impact on the nation's drug problem.
Responding to questions regarding the rehabilitation efforts of drug offenders at the Parliament today, Minister Imran said that the number of drug offenders in the Maldives is exceptionally high based on global percentages.
And a failure to conduct the best rehabilitation and vocational training programs for them leads to repeat offences and ending up back in prison after a month from release.
The Home Minister said that they plan to develop a prison on the Open Prison concept and conduct high quality programs without making the inmates feel they are in a prison. So when they leave in two to three years, they would be ready to make a living.
He said that a number of research is being done to bring the idea to fruition.
And so, the Home Minister shared plans of a Correctional Center at Haa Dhaalu Atoll Neykurendhoo.
