After two more people tests for COVID-19 in the Maldives, the total number of cases in the country has risen to 228.

Health Ministry said that the two most recent people to test positive are a Bangladeshi national and a 33-year-old local.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Maldives was found after two people were tested on 7 March in Kuredu Resort; two foreign employees at the resrot. The first case in the Maldivian capital was found on 15 April after which the entire country went on lock down. The illness has now spread to the atolls with after a person from the capital traveled out of the city. The first confirmed case in the atolls were found in Uligan in Haa Alifu Atoll.

The second person was confirmed in the atolls on 25 April in Shaviyani Atoll Narudhoo.

While the illness continues to spread rapidly in the country, most cases are found with foreigners; especially Bangladeshi nationals. There are also cases confirmed after Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan nationals tested positive in the Maldives.

Maldives closed its borders on 27 March and the Male’ City went to lock down on 15 April for 24 hours before being extended by 14 days on 17 April.
