Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has noted that the Minimum Wage Board has advised him that MVR 6,400 should be set as the minimum wage in the Maldives.
Speaking to "One Online", Minister Fayyaz confirmed that the advisory board has gotten back to him and advised him that MVR 6,400 should be set as the minimum wage across the nation while an amount between MVR 6,400 and MVR 8,400 should be set for resort workers.
The Minister however said that even though the board has advised on this, several other factors are to be weighed in including relevant authorities and industry professionals. As such he noted that they should check on employers if it is a feasible option or not.
Minister Fayyaz had submitted to the parliament seeking their opinion on the minimum wage amount on February 18th as well.
The Report on Minimum Wage by Salary and Wage Advisory Board, Report by International Labor Organisation as well as the Economic Ministry's findings on setting a minimum wage were submitted to the Parliament by Minister Fayyaz.
In a tweet sent out on February 11th, the Minister said that after discussions on minimum wage and regulations, all of it would be made public by the end of the month. State had submitted an amendment to the Employment Act, which grants the Minister the power to set a minimum wage for the working class.
The amendment dictates that the minimum wage would be set by the Economic Minister with the advise of a special board.
