Elections Commission has officially opened the candidate applications for the Local Council Election and the Women’s Development Committees Elections set for 4 April 2020.

At a special function to inaugurate the elections held last night, the Vice President and Spokesperson of the Elections Commission, Ahmed Akram announced that the candidate applications are now open.

He said that application forms are available from the Commission until 10 p.m. every night and 24-hours from their website until the application deadline closes on 24 February.

Akram said that the coming election is going to be the most varied election in the history of the Commission. And as the new amendment to the Local Council Act will be coming to effect, it also requires an election for the Women’s Development Committees.

A total of 1,912 are believed to be running in the coming elections according to the Elections Commission with 982 candidates in the Local Council Elections and 930 candidates in the Women’s Development Committees Elections.

The Commission said that 545 boxes are going to be placed for voting this time with 173 boxes in Male’ City, 322 boxes throughout the atolls, eight boxes abroad along with 42 boxes in the resorts, prisons and industrial islands.
