Turkish Minister of Interior, Süleyman Soylu, has said that the Turkey will be providing assistance to the Maldives to improve the Maldivian police service and the prisons in the country.

He made the remake at a meeting with the Maldivian Home Minister, Imran Abdulla, as part of Minister Imran’s ongoing visit to Turkey. This is the first time a Maldivian Minister for Home Affairs has met with a Turkish Interior Minister.

At the meeting the two ministers discussed strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Home Ministry said that improving the police service and gaining the public trust is an important government priority.

And improving the conditions at the jails and prisons in the country, design the prison structure to protect the human decencies and make them places of rehabilitation instead of punishment is an important policy of the government.

The Home Ministry said that the government has conducted a number of programs to train prison officers in the current term so far.

Under the government policy for prison reform, the Male’ Jail was recently renovated and a part of Dhoonidhoo Jail has been demolished for re-construction.
