The Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment by the United Nations Human Rights Council, Nils Melzer is set to visit the Maldives on Sunday.
The visit by the UN Special Rapporteur upon the invitation by the Maldivian government is set to last from 17 to 24 November.
The Maldivian office at the UN said that the delegation Mr. Melzer will focus taking the necessary steps to ensure a repeat of further inhumane, merciless and degrading behavior will not take place in the country.
The UN said that the Special Rapporteur will assess and steps to prevent a repeat of the past suggest the steps to ensure it.
Melzer is also set to meeting state officials, MPs and members of the different judicial branches along with various social organizations and entities under the National Human Rights Mechanism.
He is also set visit detention centers run by the criminal justice system and the immigration.
Melzer is an expert on the Special Procedures, the largest International group of experts under the UN flag.
