The hearing set for today in the trial against the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has begun.
The State is set to present evidence at the hearing today against the former President in the charge of money laundering.
Witnesses presented at the hearing being held at the Criminal Court today include the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor along with the current President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Muavviz Rasheed and the former Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Abdulla Ziyath.
Former President Yameen is charged with misleading the origin of the money he received from SOF account after agreeing with the ACC to transfer that money to an escrow account and instead, transferred that money to a general investment account at the Maldives Islamic Bank.
The state said that the money in question is owed to the state as they were made by leasing lagoons and islands for tourism development.
