Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, has said that the newly set prices for taxi fares are not small and the Ministry is aware of the rumors of a protest by drivers and the Ministry are taking precautions accordingly.

In an interview with One Online, Minister Nahula said that despite a protest by taxi drivers, arrangements will be made as not to disrupt the daily life of the people. And there is not thinking in regards to bringing a change to the new prices.

Minister Nahula said that the Ministry is working to find a solution through MTCC and the MPL. And legal action will be sought against people who step outside the laws and regulations.

The Transport Minister further said that every individual and group has the right to express themselves freely, however, the government decided to make such a change following repeated complaints of the public including the difficulty in getting a taxi and the unreasonable fares.

Highlighting that the newly set price is not low, Minister Nahula said that average fuel cost from Kalhuthukalaa Koshi to the Hulhumale’ BBQ Point is MVR 12 and so setting the Male-Hulhumale' at MVR 75 is by no means a low amount.
