Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula has said that discussions are under way to require seat belts to be worn during car travel, and a decision would be made soon.

She made the statement responding to a question from the MP for South Mahchangolhi constituency, Ahmed Haitham, at the Parliament sitting today.

MP Haitham asked whether seat belt requirements are being considered for cars similar to how motorcycle drivers are required to wear helmets above a certain speed.

Minister Nahula said that she believes seat belts need to be worn when driving at high speeds and give it a special attention especially when traveling over the bridge.

The Transport Minister said that a decision would be made on the matter in the future on a policy level.
