Chief Judge at the Criminal Court, Judge Hailam, has said that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has not informed him that they are investigating a case related to him.
Judge Hailam, who is also presiding over the trial of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, was told at the courtroom today by the defence attorneys that the JSC is investigating him and thus could influence the trial, and so a request has been made at the Criminal Court and the Supreme Court to for a panel of judges for the trial.
In response, Judge Hailam said that a replacement judge could face the same issues as well and he does not believe that political figures being on the JSC would mean that a trial would be influenced.
Despite the claim by the presiding judge, on 31 July, JSC said that they are investigating a case related to Judge Hailam.
Although they announced the intent of investigation, JSC did not offer any details into the case in question.
The JSC meeting that day decided to send the case to committee for further review.
