Opposition parties PPM and PNC has stated that they do not wish to discontinue the money laundering trial on Former President Abdulla Yameen, adding that they simply wanted justice to be brought forward.

Speaking during a joint press conference held by the parties, Deputy Leader of PNC and Maavah MP Mohamed Saeed said that the case moving onto a trial after an year to the end of Yameen's tenure showed that there are political intentions behind it.

He noted that there were room to begin the trial right after the end of Yameen's tenure, and added that it was worrying that the case is moving onto a trial a year afterwards.

Saeed had also alleged that senior officials of the then government such as the Prosecutor General and ACC officials had struck a deal with the new government, since they had taken a year to submit the case for a trial.

He further raised concerns over the fact that the Criminal Court bench is incomplete while the court has begun Yameen's trial, and said that it was rather worrying to have the trial continue under such circumstances.

While a hearing of the money laundering case against Yameen was held on July 21st, the case is being overseen by Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Hailam.

A second hearing for the case has been scheduled for August 4th.
