The Criminal Court has sentenced Gufran Khalid from L. Kalaidhoo, Nest, to 9 days in prison after he caused an accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.
The accident occurred around 7:19 PM on the night of September 14 when the car Gufran was driving crashed into a parked car near the Imaan Mosque in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
When questioned by police during the investigation, he stated that he had been drinking alcohol prior to the accident. He also stated that the beer cans found in the car he was driving were items he kept for consumption.
Consequently, the state prosecuted him on charges of consuming alcohol.
In the verdict, the court noted that since Gufran confessed during police questioning that he had consumed alcohol before the accident involving the parked car near the Imaan Mosque in Hulhumalé Phase 2, he was found guilty of the offense.
In addition, as punishment for the crime, the court sentenced Gufran Khalid to 9 days in prison, 40 lashes, and a fine of MVR 3,600. He was also instructed to pay the fine to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority within 30 days.
However, the Criminal Court also ruled that after deducting the period he spent in custody prior to sentencing, his required prison term had already been fully served.
