The incinerator being developed in Thilafushi to safely dispose of hazardous waste and fibreglass is expected to be completed and operational by mid-2028, Environment Minister Ali Shareef has said.
Speaking on the 10th episode of the Ahaa forum, Shareef said the facility would help address growing waste management challenges faced by industries handling fibreglass across the Maldives.
He said construction had been delayed due to disputes with the previous contractor, but discussions to appoint a new contractor had been successfully concluded. Work on the project, which is 40 per cent complete, is expected to resume soon.
The minister said fibreglass and other durable materials require specialised disposal methods, adding that the Government was prioritising their safe management.
Shareef also said a waste-to-energy plant had been established in Addu City as part of efforts to strengthen the country's waste management system.
