Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has arrived at the Criminal Court for the hearing in the trial against him in the charge of money laundering.
The trial is set to be broadcasted on television.
Criminal Court said that the trial is being broadcasted because the case is related to public funds and has a great deal of concern from the public. The statement issued by the court last night announcing the broadcast said that the decision was made to ensure Article 42 of the Constitution will also be met this way.
Article 42-A of the Constitution says that every person deserved the right to a fair and independent trial in any valid court and tribunal.
The Criminal Court said that the broadcast opportunity has been opened to all registered media outlets in the country depending the space at the courtroom.
Maldives Judicial Administration said that the hearing will be broadcasted by the state media PSM and the live feed will be given to other stations.
