Parliament has unanimously passed the amended Human Organ Transplant Bill after incorporating revisions proposed following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's decision to return the legislation for reconsideration.
The President had asked Parliament to review the bill, citing concerns that several provisions could create practical challenges in implementing the law.
The amended bill reinstates provisions that prohibit individuals under State custody, those serving criminal sentences, and people detained on criminal charges from donating organs.
It also revises penalties for illegal organ removal and transplantation by replacing provisions on qisas and organ confiscation with fines ranging from MVR 150,000 to MVR 250,000 and prison sentences of between 12 and 18 months.
Under the legislation, regulations must be formulated within 180 days of ratification, and the Act will come into force 180 days after ratification. An Organ Transplant Council must also be established within 60 days of the Act taking effect.
The bill was passed with the unanimous support of all 58 members present following the presentation of the Social Affairs Committee's report.
