Bank of Maldives (BML) has sold USD 1.7 billion over the past two and a half years.

BML stated that this includes card transactions, Telegraphic Transfers (TTs), education, medical treatment, and travel purposes. In this regard, from January 2024 to the end of June this year, BML has sold USD 1.7 billion to its customers.

This represents a 77 percent or USD 741 million increase compared to the USD 957 million sold in the preceding two and a half years (from July 2021 to December 2023).

Looking at card transactions, BML has sold USD 870 million over the past two and a half years for card transactions made from Maldivian Rufiyaa accounts. This is a twofold increase compared to the preceding two and a half years. While an average of USD 10.7 million per month was sold for this purpose in 2021, an average of USD 37.8 million per month is being sold this year.

In 2023, the bank sold an average of USD 10.2 million per month for sending TTs. During this year, the bank is selling an average of USD 28 million per month.

BML noted that regarding the amount of foreign currency sold for education and medical treatment, USD 2.9 million was sold per month in 2023. This figure rose to USD 4 million in 2024 and to USD 5 million in 2025. This year, the bank is selling USD 5.8 million per month.

While USD 155 million was sold as cash to travelers from January 2021 to December 2023, USD 264 million was sold from January 2024 to the end of June 2026. This is an increase of approximately 70 percent. Looking at the past 6 months of this year, the bank has sold USD 8.5 million per month.

The amount of foreign currency sold by the bank per month has increased nearly fourfold over the past five years. Accordingly, while an average of USD 21 million was sold per month in 2021, this figure has increased to USD 80 million per month during the first six months of 2026.
