The Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) has launched a free legal aid clinic to provide legal assistance to members of the public, particularly those in vulnerable situations.

The clinic, which was established in October last year, is the first legal clinic in the Maldives to receive accreditation from the Bar Council of Maldives to conduct training programmes for lawyers.

Opened to the public as part of the university's 47th anniversary celebrations, the clinic aims to provide legal advice and assistance to financially disadvantaged individuals, people with disabilities, and vulnerable families.

In addition to legal advice, the clinic offers services such as preparing court documents and drafting contracts and other legal documents.

IUM said the services are provided by the university's law students under the supervision of experienced lecturers and licensed lawyers. All cases submitted to the clinic are assessed in line with the clinic's policies before assistance is provided.

The clinic handles family matters, civil cases, employment disputes and legal issues involving small businesses. However, it does not accept serious criminal cases or matters involving large financial transactions.

Those seeking assistance can submit their requests through an online form or by email.
