Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef has said that protecting the Maldives' natural resources is essential for the country's economy and the livelihoods of its people.

Speaking at the Blue Carbon Side Event during the 9th Session of the United Nations Environment and Development Committee in Bangkok, Thailand, Shareef highlighted the environmental challenges facing the Maldives.

He said beaches, wetlands and mangroves play a vital role in capturing carbon, protecting islands from sea level rise and supporting the country's key industries, including fisheries and tourism.

Shareef noted that the Maldives is implementing several blue carbon projects and is giving priority to expanding protected areas and using natural ecosystems to address climate change.

He also called for greater international financial and technical support to strengthen carbon standards and stressed the need for increased regional cooperation to empower island communities.
