President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the list of beneficiaries for the government's newly opened housing project will be publicized within this year, following the completion of the verification process for all flat and land plot applications.
The President made these remarks during a press conference held at the President's Office today, in response to a question from a journalist.
The President stated that the government is carrying out the housing projects with utmost transparency and completely free from any external influence. He noted that in previous housing schemes, some individuals had unfairly obtained flats and land plots through undue influence. He assured the public that the current allocation process is designed to prevent such grievances, emphasizing that housing under this administration will not be granted based on personal connections, but strictly to those who genuinely qualify and deserve it.
President Muizzu explained that all submitted details will be thoroughly verified against the established criteria before any land plots or flats are awarded, which is why the administration has decided to dedicate adequate time to the process. Consequently, he stated that an exact date for the final handover of the housing units cannot be provided at this time.
Under the administration's "Housing for All" policy, a total of 58,505 applications were submitted, marking the highest number of applications received for a government housing scheme in Maldivian history. This total includes 35,930 applications for flats and 22,575 for land plots. The government has already begun the verification process for these forms. Previously, the record for the highest number of housing applications was held by the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration under the "Gedhoruveriya" and "Binveriya" schemes, which attracted over 40,000 applications.
The government has decided to allocate 7,900 flats and 15,000 land plots under the program announced on January 18. Among the flats, 4,000 are designated for Malé residents, 1,500 for residents living in Malé who are registered elsewhere, and 2,400 for special categories. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the administration aims to allocate a total of 25,000 land plots from Rasmalé—which is currently being reclaimed—to provide a permanent solution to the housing crisis. However, 15,000 land plots will be issued from that area during this ongoing initial round.
