The Maldives has once again been ranked as the country with the highest cost of living in the South Asian region. According to the latest data from Numbeo, a global database tracking living costs, an individual in the Maldives requires an estimated $812 (approximately MVR 12,557) per month to cover basic expenses, excluding rent.
The Maldives' living expenses are substantially higher compared to other SAARC nations:
- Maldives: $812
- Sri Lanka: $507
- Bhutan: $387
- Afghanistan: $381
- Bangladesh: $348
- Pakistan: $340
- Nepal: $335
- India: $313
Economic reports attribute the high cost of living primarily to the Maldives' heavy reliance on imported commodities and a recent surge in global food prices. Additionally, the inflated exchange rate in the informal dollar market (black market) was highlighted as a major driver pushing up the prices of goods.
The statistics underscore a widening disparity between the public's average income and actual living expenditures. While the minimum wage for civil service employees stands at MVR 7,000, the reality that an individual needs over MVR 12,000 solely for essential needs places a severe financial strain on citizens. Local media reports indicate that many families are forced to spend the vast majority of their earnings strictly on rent and food.
