The Maldives Police Service has stated that no information or evidence relating to alleged corruption found on the phone of former Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, has been shared with police.

In a statement, police said Shamaan had publicly claimed that his phone contained evidence of corruption involving Home Minister Ali Ihusan and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. However, police said neither Shamaan nor any other party had provided such information to investigators or any institution legally mandated to investigate corruption.

Police noted that Shamaan was convicted on charges including abuse of official authority and money laundering and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. They also rejected allegations that the investigation was politically motivated or influenced by any individual, stating that all findings were based on evidence and carried out in accordance with the law.

According to police, investigators were unable to access Shamaan’s phone because he did not provide the device’s passcode. As a result, they were unable to examine any information stored on it during the investigation.

Police further stated that any credible evidence of criminal activity submitted to the authorities would be investigated through the proper legal process.
