President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that greater international cooperation is urgently needed to implement robust and swift measures against the accelerating threats facing the world's oceans.
The President made these remarks in a social media post published today in commemoration of World Oceans Day.
In his post, the President emphasized that safe and healthy oceans are vital for securing the future of the planet. Highlighting the deep, inseparable connection between Maldivians and the sea, he noted that any adverse impacts on marine ecosystems directly disrupt the Maldives' economy, food security, and environmental sustainability.
To safeguard these vital resources, the President highlighted that the Maldives is actively implementing structural efforts. These include promoting sustainable fishing practices, strengthening marine research, monitoring reef health, and executing evidence-based coral restoration and climate adaptation projects.
With ocean warming, coral bleaching, and coastal erosion escalating at alarming rates, President Muizzu stressed that the global community must step up with faster and more effective interventions. He concluded by calling on all nations and individuals to renew their collective resolve to work together to protect the oceans for future generations.
