President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to allocate MVR 7 million annually from the Maldives Green Fund to implement necessary measures for environmental protection and preservation.
In his message on World Environment Day, the President stated that today is a day to reflect deeply on the surrounding environment and strengthen the resolve to safeguard this fragile ecosystem, ensuring it is passed down in its best state to future generations.
The President noted that scientific research indicates major global environmental shifts ahead, making it imperative to take initiative, adapt lifestyles, and increase conservation efforts. He highlighted that the Maldives is already experiencing the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather, rising sea levels, and damage to reefs and marine life, noting that while global collective action is essential, national and individual efforts are equally important.
He added that the natural beauty of the Maldives—its lush greenery, white sandy beaches, clear turquoise waters, vibrant reefs, and rich marine life including sea turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks—is what makes the country a premier global tourist destination.
The President pointed out that the lack of adequate financial resources and a guaranteed annual budget has historically been the greatest obstacle to monitoring environmental changes, mitigating damage, and implementing protective measures alongside national development.
"Therefore, I have decided today to allocate MVR 7 million annually from the Maldives Green Fund for this purpose. This funding will be provided in addition to the regular annual budget allocated to the environmental sector. This will strengthen and elevate the priority given by the Maldives Green Fund toward environmental preservation," the President stated. The President explained that these funds will primarily be used for the management and monitoring of protected areas and their ecosystems, as well as necessary maintenance work. The funding will also support creating sustainable benefits from conservation, conducting environmental research, publicizing information, building technical capacity, and running collaborative programs with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and school environment clubs to boost public participation.
The President expressed hope that this initiative will fortify environmental protection efforts, pave the way for the formulation and execution of long-term projects, and create a sustainable legacy that benefits future generations.
