Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has claimed that some ruling party PNC members of Parliament are prepared to leave the party in order to hold the government accountable.

Speaking at the closing rally for MDP candidate Abdulla Sodig (Sobe) in the South Hithadhoo by-election campaign, Solih said a PNC MP had recently contacted him and expressed a desire to leave the party due to dissatisfaction with the government's direction.

According to Solih, several other PNC MPs are also considering the same move. He said they are willing to work to ensure greater accountability from the government.

Solih further claimed that the MPs had sought assurances that they would receive support if they lost their parliamentary seats after switching parties. He said they wanted backing from the Maldives’ three former presidents in any potential by-election.

The former president also criticised the current Parliament, saying it was failing to adequately scrutinise the government. Echoing comments previously made by former President Mohamed Nasheed, Solih said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu should be held accountable before the end of the year.

He added that if this does not happen, President Dr Muizzu would ultimately have to step down from office.
