The Maldives has been elected to the position of Vice-Chair of the United Nations General Assembly's Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee).
The Maldives was elected to the post by unanimous consensus of the General Assembly during the election held yesterday at the UN Headquarters.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Maldives will be represented in the role by Hussain Azhaan Mohamed Hussain, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the Maldives will play an important role in collaborating with the Committee's Chair and other Bureau members to effectively drive the committee’s work during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. The ministry noted that the 81st Session of the UNGA will take place from September this year to September next year.
The ministry highlighted that the election of the Maldives to this post demonstrates the international community's trust and confidence in the constructive policies maintained by the country at the UN.
The Ministry further stated that this election comes at a time when the Maldives is actively working to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advocate for the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on the international stage.
The Economic and Financial Committee, widely known as the "Second Committee," is one of the six main committees of the UN General Assembly. Its primary responsibility is to guide the UN's work on key issues relating to economic growth and sustainable development. While the Bureau holds full authority to plan and manage the committee's proceedings, its operations generally move forward under the Bureau's direct guidance and counsel.
