President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has hinted today that a relief will be achieved for the dollar issue around the end of this month.
The President made these remarks while responding to a question from a journalist regarding the dollar shortage during a press conference held at the President's Office today.
The President stated that despite Bank of Maldives (BML) currently lowering card limits due to certain challenges, an indication has been received from the bank that relief will be provided by the end of this month regarding the existing limits imposed on foreign currency transactions made via its cards.
"Bank of Maldives is currently restricting transactions slightly because they are facing some difficulties. However, when the President's Office sought information from the bank yesterday, they indicated that, God willing, they will ease the limits by the end of this month," the President said.
Initially, a $250 limit was set for BML debit cards to make payments for foreign goods and services. Although that limit was increased to $500 last year, a specific restrictive limit has now been imposed on all debit cards. Following this change, many citizens have been expressing concern as they face difficulties purchasing items from foreign websites, even for small amounts.
